Top Tips for Online Job Searching

Posted by admin on May 2, 2017

In a world where technology is advancing every single day, it’s hard to imagine searching for a job anywhere other than the Internet. However, this means the job options available online are extremely vast, which can prove to be overwhelming.

It’s not unusual for hundreds upon hundreds of applications to be submitted in response to one online job advertisement. From this, only a few will be chosen for an interview, which can mean the likelihood of obtaining the role, or even an interview, is extremely scarce.

However, there are a few things you can do in order to increase your chances. We’ve put together some different approaches that are proven to be effective.

Before you begin applying for jobs, take some time to build your network, both online and in person. Attending networking events for your industry of choice is the perfect way to do so, and you could begin to build rapports with well-known professionals. With every new acquaintance you associate yourself with, your network will increase. Take a look at your online profiles, like Linked In. Remember that if you’re applying for a job online, it’s likely your employer will do a Google search of your name!

Most online job search websites work via keywords. It’s important to understand what keywords might bring up the jobs you’re looking for, and to not get disheartened when you don’t find your ideal job upon two searches. Try different job searching websites, as they may feature different jobs to one another, or get the help from a recruitment website like Honor Search, who can help find jobs that are ideal when paired with your previous experience and possible future endeavours.

If you’ve found some roles you’d like to apply for, do your research before you click that all important ‘Apply’ button. You can relate any previous experience directly to the work the business does on your cover letter, which could be the reason you’re chosen for the interview process over others. We’ve written a previous blog on how to write the perfect cover letter, which you may find useful.

Be Positive

It’s not unlikely that you will receive a few knock backs when looking for a new job. If you are rejected or don’t get a response, don’t take it personally. It’s probably not because of anything you have done wrong, and rather the sheer amount of applicants that have applied! Learn to find different ways to find advertised jobs instead. Many jobs are advertised internally or via recruitment websites before they are advertised on job sites like Monster on Indeed.
